Turns out when you send a Unicode SMS, at least with Clickatell, you have to use Big Endian Unicode. I guess it makes sense. Glad I can recognise katakana codepoints

You must mean UTF-16BE, Unicode itself isn’t endian though any transformation other than UTF-8 (or the deprecated UTF-7) will be.

Well yeah which is why I said BIG ENDIAN.
